Headline Developments

Transformation tools absorb catalog and quality.

Fivetran + dbt Labs made dbt v2 (a Rust rewrite, up to 10x faster on 10,000-model projects) and dbt State GA and put a Fivetran Context Layer into private beta. A day earlier, Coalesce 2.0 merged Transform with its acquired catalog (CastorDoc) and observability (SYNQ) products on one context layer, driven by a local CLI, MCP server and Claude Code plugin. Both moves put transformation vendors in direct competition with standalone catalogs.

(Business Wire, Sep 16; Coalesce, Sep 15)

Catalogs pivot from discovery to runtime agent governance.

Collibra unveiled Maestro, Live Map and Guardian Agents with Agent Contracts (Sep 24, detailed below). In the same month Alation expanded its AIOS with six products, DataHub moved its Context Platform to public beta with agents and ontologies, and Atlan's Microsoft Fabric connector went GA. Every major catalog now sells itself as an AI context and control layer.

(BigDATAwire, Sep 24; GlobeNewswire, Sep 17; EMA, Sep 24; Business Wire, Sep 29)

Data security consolidation accelerates.

Bloomberg reported Proofpoint in talks to acquire Varonis for about $5.4B; no deal was signed by month end. Cyera added a $400M extension to its June Series G (now $1.4B raised in 2026), and BigID made AgentIQ GA, an agent layer that can revoke access or quarantine data on its own.

(Bloomberg, Sep 2; SecurityWeek, Sep 22; EMA, Sep 29)

NVIDIA buys Hugging Face for $12.9B.

First reported Aug 27 and confirmed Sep 3, the deal puts the leading neutral model and dataset hub under a hardware vendor. NVIDIA says the Hub stays open and NVIDIA compute will not be required, but neutrality now has to be monitored.

(TechCrunch, Sep 3; Tech.eu, Aug 27)

Frontier model prices fall sharply.

OpenAI shipped GPT-6 Astra (Sep 3), then Sol and Luna (Sep 22), with Luna at $0.10/$0.50 per million tokens. Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 (Sep 1), Opus 5.5 (about 40% cheaper than Opus 5) and Sonnet 5.5 (Sep 28); Google shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash and previewed Gemini 4 Argon to a restricted group. OpenAI's new Data agent in ChatGPT Work also moves the model vendor directly into BI.

(VentureBeat, Sep 22; AWS Weekly Roundup, Sep 28; BigDATAwire, Sep 11)

2.

Spotlight: Collibra, September 24

Collibra launched three capabilities aimed at what it calls the "hallucination tax" of enterprise AI: the cost of errors, rework and lost trust when agents lack governed context. (BigDATAwire, Sep 24; PR Newswire, Sep 23 US time)

Collibra Maestro

Public Preview now

A suite built on Collibra's Knowledge Graph that unifies its existing AI utilities. Maestro Studio is a visual no-code builder where governance teams set an agent's persona, permissions, tools and certified knowledge sources; end users reach those agents through Maestro Assistant chat.

Live Map

design partners this quarter

Built on the Deasy Labs acquisition, it gives agents a context graph of entities and relationships across unstructured documents, so they do not rebuild that context per query.

Agent Contracts and Guardian Agents

October, via AI Command Center

Contracts define layered, machine-readable rules by function, risk class or context across the whole agent fleet, including agents built on other platforms. Guardian Agents enforce them at runtime, from flagging and escalating to blocking unauthorized actions.

AIUC-1 certification

Maestro Assistant is certified against the AIUC-1 agent standard, which Collibra says is a first among data and AI governance vendors.

Analyst view

The move shifts Collibra from a system of record for governance to a runtime control point for agents. That widens its addressable market but puts it against platform-native controls (Purview, Unity Catalog, Salesforce's AI Control Plane) and AI governance specialists. Only Maestro is usable today, so the October delivery of Agent Contracts and Guardian Agents is the proof point.
